Fiber Animals

Pretty FaceLet’s not forget where this wonderful natural fiber comes from!  This is my llama named “Pretty Face” who lives happily with my family here in Estancia, New Mexico.  I am not sure how old she is, but I would venture to guess that she is at least 7 years old.  I bought her a year ago, and was told that 5 years ago, her fleece won first place at the Taos Wool Festival.  Hopefully that comment was not lie told to convince me to purchase.

Pretty face gave birth to a beautiful baby girl today, August 9, 2007. Mother and baby are doing fine. The baby is a peachy light brown color with a grey stripe down her neck. I have named her “Peaches”. It was a scarey birth for me. Around 10:30 am we noticed two legs emerging from the back end of Prettyface. About an hour or so later, Hercules (our great pyranes) also noticed them, and started chasing Prettyface to see what the heck was going on! By then the head had popped out and poor Prettyface was was running around flopping her baby’s head up and down unmercifully. We got her into the sheltered pen, and gently pulled the baby out. Prettyface had no idea she had given birth and walked away from us. My ex-husband started cleaning the baby, and cleared the airway. The baby started humming (the noise llama’s make) and Prettyface looked over the fence to investigate the noise. Mommy instinct took over, and she finished cleaning her up. Watching animals nuzzle their infant’s faces is one of the beauties of being a rancher. I stayed in the pen watching from a distance until the little one finally stood up on wabbly legs. Ah! Life is good!

I have given up the ranch in trade for a gorgeous, loving new husband. I will miss it, but do feel I traded up! I have plenty of friends who do still raise fiber animals in the East Mountains of New Mexico. Once I run out of my own fiber, I do know where to find more!
