Farmer’s Markets
Ok, sorry about this…… but I must rant! As I have stated, I sell my wares at the Farmer’s Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Currently market is open on Tuesday and Saturday, with Tuesday being our slow day. We hold market at the DeVargas Center, which is a small mall. We set up in a parking lot next to the center. As everyone knows, in every parking lot there is a road on the inside and outside of the lot to allow you to manuever from one row to the next. On Saturdays, these roads are closed off and vendors set up their booths in the road. On Tuedsay, our slower day, the city will not allow the market to close off the roads to thru traffic. So……. seeing the canopies and knowing that the market is present, and thereby FAMILIES are present, why must idiots speed thru these roads? Even if you are not interested in coming to market….. it is a parking lot! not a city road! with speed bumps! and thereby should require some small amount common decency to SLOW down for the safety of the people both vending and shopping at the market. Vendors are farmers, farmers are families……. which means the whole family comes to sell their food and crafts on market days. Our kids are at market, playing with other kids from local farms. Our customers are families…. both local and tourists who want to share this experience with their kids and teach them where their food comes from. With the rise of fast food and childhood obesity…. this is IMPORTANT information!
Second gripe……. to the customers….. we welcome you…. but please, please, PLEASE leave your pets at home! The health department simply forbids animals present at the market. Food, fruit and vegetable and baked goods are out in the open. Animals shed! This pet hair floats thru the air and lands on the food that you are eating as you walk thru the market. If the market allows this practice, we face fines from the city. As Treasurer to the SFFM, I can attest…. we just can’t allow this to happen, we can’t afford it.
The reason for my gripes? Yesterday a dog was at market, allowed to wander off it’s leash, and was hit by a speeding car not 10 feet from my booth, and in full view of my children, 4 year old Rachel and 11 year old Zac! The driver of the car was going so fast, once he slammed on his brakes, he drug that poor dog at least 20 feet! My back was to the accident, I was interacting with a customer, my children behind me playing in my van. And of course, when I heard the thump and the squeal of brakes, my first thought was that my daughter had been hit! She was fine, but both my children saw the whole event and were traumatized for the rest of the day.
Both parties were equally at fault at this accident. The dog owner should have never allowed the dog at market, and should never have had the dog off it’s leash within city limits. The driver of the car should have never been speeding thru a parking lot filled with children and walk traffic for the market!
So…. I realize this has nothing to do with creating yarns, knitting, crocheting, or weaving, but it has everything do with the place I have chosen to sell said items. My message is clear….. don’t bring dogs to any event where food is present…. if you bring your dog to any event where there are people gathered, be responsible enough to keep them on a leash….. and if you are ever driving past an event where people are gathered, have enough respect for those individuals gathered to slow your vehicle down! Children are as innocent as animals and don’t know the dangers of “I couldn’t stop in time”.
